How often should I wash my sportswear?
Less is often more. Washing sportswear properly extends its lifespan and maintains its functionality. But how often should you wash functional clothing? The answer depends largely on the sport and the intensity of your training.
Washing recommendations by sport
- Cycling: Wash after every ride – seat cushions, friction and sweat quickly cause odors.
- Running: Clean after every run, especially after intense or warm training.
- Strength training & fitness: Only if you sweat a lot, otherwise a wash after 2-3 sessions is enough.
Tip: Often, it's enough to air out your clothes thoroughly after training. Hang them out in the fresh air instead of putting them in the washing machine right away.
Typical mistakes when washing sportswear
To ensure that functional fibers and breathability are maintained for a long time, you should avoid these mistakes:
- Wrong detergent: Normal laundry detergent can damage the fibers – it is better to use special sports or delicate detergent.
- Fabric softener: Clogs the membrane of functional fabrics and reduces breathability.
- Washing too hot: Temperatures above 30–40 °C cause elastane and stretch fibers to age faster.
- Mixing with coarse laundry: Zippers or jeans can damage delicate fabrics.
Tips for longer durability of your sportswear
- Use sports detergent : Effectively removes odors and protects the fibers.
- Gentle 30-degree wash : Completely sufficient and protects the materials.
- Air dry instead of dryer : Heat destroys elasticity and shortens lifespan.
- Wash separately or in laundry bags : Prevents abrasion and material damage.
- Ventilate regularly : sweat dries faster and unpleasant odors do not develop in the first place.
